The Syrian Crisis: Effects on the Regional and ...

This book analyses the Syrian crisis from an international relations perspective. Developing into a proxy war, the Syrian crisis has been a battleground for regional dominance. It has also created an opportunity for new states to emerge in the world affairs scene. For example, Russia, which since the fall of the Soviet Union has retreated from world affairs, has reasserted itself by taking a leading role in the Syrian crisis. The Syrian crisis has had an important impact on interregional as well as international relations. It has also been a catalyst that reshaped the many interstate relations and allowed countries such as Russia, Iran, Turkey and China to play an increasingly important role in international affairs. While the crisis led to an Iranian Russian rapprochement and to more cooperation between Russia and Saudi Arabia, the crisis drove states that have opposing views of the crisis, Turkey, Iran and Russia, to forge an alliance. China on the other hand, a country focused on its ambitious Belt and Road Initiative is trying to walk a fine line between the Arab Gulf and Iran. This book looks at the tools, actors, and structures that have emerged out of this conflict. The conflict is distinguished by a rise in extremism, an unprecedented use of violent non-state actors, propaganda and by a sectarian narrative which will have an effect on the region for the years to come. The only light at the end of the tunnel are the local councils that can create a foundation to stabilise Syria. This book would be a valuable read for scholars as well as students of the Middle East in general and the Syrian crisis in particular.

This thesis investigates Sino-Japanese relations and the post-Cold War security order in East Asia. In particular, it asks whether a security regime' now exists in the region, by exploring three distinctive approaches to the possibility of structural change Waltz and neorealism, Wendt and social constructivism, and Buzan and the English school. While not ignoring the impact of shifts in the balance of power on security practices, I also investigate ideational variables that is the kinds of values, norms and institutions that are shared by the members of the East Asian RSC. I go on to ask why they are shared, how their identities and interests evolve over time and how these changes influence securitisation and desecuritisation practices. By examining these variables through societal, economic and military-political sectors, and locating them at domestic, regional, interregional and global levels, I conclude that, together with Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia has formed a single East Asian security regime'.

With the maturity of the EU as a regional andinternational actor, its role in the foreign policyrelations has acquired an individual form. Over thelast two decades, the EU has been usinginterregionalism as one of its foreign policy toolsto conduct its external policies in Asia, LatinAmerica, and Africa. This paper concentrates on theEU s interregional ties with Asia, examining theAsia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) process and the EU-ASEANpartnership. The primary question to be answered iswhether interregionalism is a viable foreign policytool to pursue the EU s external relations in Asia.Departing from this point, the paper argues that thesuccess of the interregional relations is very muchdependent on the level of integration of thecounterpart regions involved in the process. Moreover, the paper demonstrates that the growingregional cohesion of the ASEAN as a regionalorganization has huge impact on overall success ofthe interregional EU-ASEAN partnership, whilerelatively low productivity of the ASEM could be bestexplained by the lack of cohesion among the Asiancounterparts of the EU involved in the process.

Rethinking Input-Output Analysis

This book highlights the social, economic and environmental importance of the mutual relations between industries in the same and in different regions and nations, and demonstrates how to model these relations using regional, interregional and international input-output (IO) models. It enables readers familiar with standard matrix algebra to extend these basic IO models with endogenous household expenditures, to employ supply-use tables (SUTs) that explicitly distinguish the products used and sold by industry, and to use Social Accounting Matrices (SAMs) that detail the generation, redistribution and spending of income. In addition to the standard demand-driven IO quantity model and its accompanying cost-push IO price model, the book also discusses the economic assumptions and usefulness of the supply-driven IO quantity model and its accompanying revenue-pull IO price model. The final chapters highlight three main applications of the IO model: (1) economic impact analysis of negative supply shocks as caused by, for example, natural disasters, (2) linkages, key sector and cluster analysis, (3) structural decomposition analysis, especially of regional, interregional and international growth, and demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of these IO applications. This book appeals to economists and planners as well as scholars of regional and spatial science.

This thesis investigates Sino-Japanese relations and the post-Cold War security order in East Asia. Globalisation and Services-driven Economic Growth

Following drastic shifts in the spatial organization of goods production, increasingly fierce competition now forces firms also to look critically at how to organize the production of services. While digitization and advances in information and communication technologies have enabled firms to unbundle service production processes, the increased global availability of skilled labour allows for the relocation of ever more of these processes around the world. As a result, a new geography of services production takes shape: a geography that is defined by new interregional and international divisions of labour and held together by increasingly complex global services production networks. This book examines how the reorganisation of services production alters relations between and generates different sets of challenges and opportunities for economic development in the Global North and the Global South. Drawing from 11 case studies probing various aspects of services production in different parts of the world, the book brings out the remarkable heterogeneity and transformative capacities of services. It successively shows how global trade in services creates new interdependencies between services producing and services consuming regions; reveals how services help to mitigate the impact of and contribute to recovery from economic crises in the Global North; and demonstrates how services offshoring fosters economic development and service-sector driven modernisation processes in the Global South. The book's openness to the heterogeneous and dynamic nature of services production enlarges our understanding of which particular services in which spatiotemporal context have the capacity to generate good jobs, contribute to productivity and drive economic growth. The book stands out from other books in the field in that it combines perspectives on services-driven transformations from both the Global North and the Global South and looks into the role of various services segments. Based on pioneering empirical research and original data it offers a timely contribution to this growing debate. The book provides valuable insights for students, scholars and professionals interested in services, services offshoring, services-driven growth, and socioeconomic transformations in the Global North and South.
